Hidden Dangers

A fin. We saw a fin. While my family and I were swimming in the ocean last month, we saw a big fin swim less than 20 yards from us. I don’t know what it was. Our first thought was that it was a shark. Or it could have been a dolphin or a big fish. All I know is that it was scary! There are a lot of scary things in our world, aren’t there? There are hidden dangers all around us. Accidents. Sickness. Violence. You don’t have to be in the ocean. Disaster could strike at any time. How can we live like this? Isn’t it scary?

The world is scary, but we have our God. Or—better yet—God has us! “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust’” (Psalm 91:1-2). So, “You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday” (Psalm 91:5-6). It’s true that there are hidden dangers all around us, but so is our God. He is our fortress and refuge and Savior. You don’t have to fear hidden dangers. The worst that can happen is that you will open your eyes in heaven. Even if you see a fin, may God take away all your fears today.

  1. Thank you, Pastor. The devil really wants us to fear everything around us, to be consumed by it. What a different perspective a person could have after meditating on these verses and taking them to heart.

    1. Thank you for such a reassuring message. As I started my new job working with convicts, I know that God will help me stay on my toes and know what to do in a dangerous situation. It makes me love my job all the more. God Bless your day!

    2. Thanks for reading! It’s true that there are so many things around us that could make us afraid, but we don’t have to be afraid, because our God is with us. It’s like Psalm 23 says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil…”
