To Whom Shall We Go?

“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Can you hear the pain in Jesus’ voice? Many people were turning away from him. People loved Jesus’ miracles like the feeding of the 5,000. Free food! People didn’t like Jesus’ message that he is God and salvation is found only in him. Sound familiar? “From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him” (John 6:66).

So Jesus turned and asked his 12 disciples, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” (John 6:67). Have you thought about it? Have you wondered whether it’s really worth it to follow Jesus? Listen to Peter’s powerful answer: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).

May God give you and me that same faith and confidence! It’s true that what Jesus says is hard for our sinful natures to hear. We’re constantly tempted to choose our ways over God’s ways, to turn away from Jesus. But to whom shall we go? Who offers you eternal life like Jesus does? Who died to forgive all of your sins like Jesus did? Who loves you with the grace that Jesus has? Who is with you every day, all the time, like Jesus is? “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life!
