A Prayer for Wisdom

A man recently admitted to me, “I have lost all confidence in making long-term decisions.” I bet you can relate. How often does it seem like you always make the wrong decision? We’re faced with dozens of decisions every day, from choosing an entrée at a restaurant to deciding between two schools to weighing different job opportunities. How often does it seem like you always make the wrong decision?

It’s humbling, isn’t it? We’re not as smart as we think we are. We’re not as wise as we pretend to be. We have so little control over what the future holds. If we always pick the wrong sandwich, how could we possibly pick the right job?

Young King Solomon recognized this. He recognized the need for godly wisdom. It doesn’t come from us. Wisdom comes from God. So, one night, God appeared to Solomon. He generously said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you” (1 Kings 3:5). Wow! What would you have asked for?

Solomon prayed, “Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (1 Kings 3:9). What a wise prayer!

Dear Lord, give us discerning hearts. Fill us with godly wisdom to prioritize you and your Word in everything we do. Help us distinguish between right and wrong. Most of all, grant us wisdom to believe in Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
