Integrity is a good thing, isn’t it? To be honest and upright. To do what’s right, regardless of the consequences. Sadly, integrity is often lacking in our world—and in us.
Daniel in the Bible provides an excellent example of integrity. When Daniel rose to a position of power in the Persian empire, his enemies were jealous. Here’s what happened: “At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Finally these men said, ‘We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God’” (Daniel 6:4-5).
As Daniel’s enemies carefully examined his life, all they could find against him was this: He believed in God. That’s integrity! Unlike so many governmental officials, Daniel wasn’t corrupt or negligent. Instead, he was trustworthy. With God’s strength, he did what was right and true.
May God grant that integrity in our lives too! You and I aren’t perfect. Daniel wasn’t either. We depend every day on the forgiveness that Jesus gives us. But wouldn’t it be great if people couldn’t find anything against us except our trust in God? Wouldn’t it be great if the only thing people could accuse us of is, “They are Christians”?
May God give us the gift of integrity.
