“Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness—in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,
To Titus, my true son in our common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.” (Titus 1:1-4)
Whom can you really believe? We hear conflicting stories from everybody. We’re used to lies. Politicians lie. The media lies. Even our friends and families lie. We lie. Whom can you really believe?
Lying isn’t new. 2,000 years ago, the people on the island of Crete—where Pastor Titus was serving—were so well-known for lying that “to Cretanize” had become a Greek word that meant “To lie.”
In a world full of lies, on an island filled with liars, whom could they believe? God! God does not lie.
God always tells us the truth—with a purpose. First, he always wants to further our faith. He wants us to keep growing in our trust in Jesus our Savior. Second, God always wants to further our knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness. As we grow in our knowledge of God’s true Word, God wants us to grow in our godliness. To stop lying and cheating and grumbling and to start speaking the truth in love.
Why? Because God does not lie, and he’s given us a hope that goes beyond this life. We have the hope of eternal life. Doesn’t that sound good? It’s true. Eternal life is waiting for you! It’s been waiting for you since before the beginning of time. An eternity ago, our God who does not lie promised to save those who believe in Jesus, and that promise will endure to eternity in heaven with Jesus.
From eternity to eternity, God does not lie. Isn’t that refreshing? Isn’t that life-changing?
You can base your life and your future on God and the certain promises of his Word. Sins forgiven through Jesus? True! Loved by God your Father? True! The hope of eternal life in heaven? True! Never alone? True! In a world full of liars, it’s great to have a God who doesn’t lie!
Dear God, it seems like I can’t trust anyone. This world—and even my own heart—are filled with lies. Thank you for always keeping your promises. Help me to trust in you who does not lie. Amen.
