Washing Your Hands

It has been the year of washing our hands. Over and over and over again! As much as you’re washing your hands, however, you’re missing something. There is a dangerous disease you’re not getting off, not even after washing for 20 full seconds. Listen: “‘Although you wash yourself with soda and use an abundance of soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me,’ declares the Sovereign Lord” (Jeremiah 2:22). No matter how much or how hard you wash, you can’t wash away your sins. You can’t get rid of the guilt. It sticks to you. It spreads. God sees! We need a different way to wash to get rid of our sins.

So it’s great to hear God’s promise. To those same sinful people who couldn’t get rid of their guilt no matter how hard they tried, God promised: “I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me” (Jeremiah 33:8). To people frantically trying to scrub their guilt away, what beautiful words! God cleanses us purely by his grace. The blood of Jesus shed on the cross has washed away every one of your sins. The guilt that no soap could take away has been completely covered by Jesus’ forgiveness. What a blessing! Every time you wash your hands, may you remember how good it is to have our hearts washed and forgiven by Jesus.
