When the Rain Comes

I was reading the Scripture lessons for a couple at their wedding. Their last Scripture lesson started like this: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down…” (Matthew 7:25). At that exact moment, when I said the words “the rain came down,” it started pouring. Normally, that’s not a problem when you’re in a church. Except, we weren’t in a church. It was an outdoor wedding in someone’s front yard! Thankfully, the couple was prepared. When the rain came down—right on cue!—we ran into their garage and finished the wedding there. It was a memorable wedding. In life, the rain comes down.

Are you prepared? There are sure a lot of things pouring on us, aren’t there? If you don’t have a solid foundation, I bet it’s starting to wash away. There are so many things we build our lives on that simply can’t support us when troubles come. But there is one foundation that can: “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25). The rain is going to come, but you have a rock, a solid foundation, even in the most difficult times: Jesus and his Word. Build your life on Jesus!
