Back to Work

After the shepherds saw Jesus and told everyone they knew about the Savior’s birth, do you know what they did? They went back to being shepherds. Listen: “The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told” (Luke 2:20).

That’s not what we’d expect. We’d expect to hear that all the shepherds became priests or pastors. That they dropped everything and become missionaries to foreign countries. That they did great things! That they changed the world! All they did was return to their fields? Why didn’t they do something great?

They did. They shepherded their sheep to the glory of God. Do you realize how great that is?

It’s easy for us to buy into the world’s idea that to be great, you have to do something great. Do you know what’s great and grand in God’s eyes? Faithfully fulfilling your calling, whatever it is, to the glory of God. If you’re a shepherd and you believe in Jesus, do you know what you should do? Be the best shepherd you can be to the glory of God. In God’s eyes, that’s great! If you’re a nurse and you believe in Jesus, do you know what you should do? Be the best nurse you can be to the glory of God. If you’re a stay-at-home mom, do you know what you should do? Be the best stay-at-home mom you can be to the glory of God. In God’s eyes, that’s great!

Martin Luther once said, “Next to faith this is the highest art—to be content with the calling in which God has placed you.” With Jesus in your heart, it’s time to get back to work to the glory of God.
