Given for You

What’s the greatest gift you’ve ever received? We celebrated a couple of birthdays at our house this month. There were some great gifts—at least we parents think so! What’s the greatest gift you’ve received? Maybe it was the keys to your first car. Maybe it was daily encouragement to make it through school. Maybe it was that diamond engagement ring. It’s great to receive a gift given for you.

There’s a gift that’s even greater. On this day—Maundy Thursday—almost 2000 years ago, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave it to his disciples, and said, “This is my body, given for you.” Then he took a cup of wine, gave it to his disciples, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:19-20). Know Jesus’ greatest gift to us? Himself. His life. His body and blood on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. In an amazing, surprising way, Jesus lets us touch and taste this gift in our hands and mouths and hearts in the Lord’s Supper. Jesus’ body and blood. For us. What a gift! You are so treasured. You are so loved. Jesus is our greatest gift, given for you!

  1. Well today I just discovered a necklace that a brother from church gave to me last month. I barely knew him. We only saw each other a few times at English service. We had evangelism training so we got paired together. After ministering to one another he called me, took off his necklace and gave it to me. Today I saw the same necklace at the mall and asked if they had the gold one because that’s the one I have. I got the shock of my life! It the most expensive piece of jewelry and definitely the greatest gift I ever owned in my life! This brother blessed me so much I’m going to write a blog about it!
